Physical Education Class Summary

Pre-Kindergarten

The physical Activity program for students in Pre-K is one of Physical exploration and experimentation. The understanding of the concepts of the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective development of children is begun at the Pre-K level. At the Pre-K level, the students are engaged in a wide variety of activities in the areas of safety guidelines, following directions and protocols. These activities are locomotion, rhythm, directionalities, recreational games, striking activities, physical fitness/wellness, and throwing and catching. Physical education experiences at this level must be very basic and repetitive in order to form a foundation to build on as the student develops. Every Physical Education class will begin with basic warm-up and stretching activities. The planned activity for the day is then introduced and executed. Special consideration is given at this level to ensure that the activities are developmentally appropriate. Assessments ongoing and emphasizes participation rather than production.

Kindergarten through Second Grade

The physical activity program for grades K-2 is one of building on previously learned skills. The understanding of the psychomotor, cognitive and affective development that was previously introduced is maintained as well as expanded at this level. The students at this level are engaged in a wide variety of activities in the areas of safety guidelines, following directions and protocols. These activities are locomotion, rhythm, directionalities, recreational games, striking activities, physical fitness/wellness, and throwing and catching. Physical education experiences at the K-2 level are still basic and repetitive, although including more details of the activity or skill is increasing the foundations formed in Pre-K. The rules of team/dual/individual sports are introduced at this level and will be reinforced and mastered at a higher level. Every Physical Education class will begin with basic warm-up and stretching activities. The planned activity for the day is then introduced and executed. Special consideration is given at this level to ensure that the activities are developmentally appropriate. Assessments ongoing and emphasizes participation rather than production.

Third through Fifth Grade

Physical Education for grades 3-5 concentrates on increasing the student’s exposure to the presently introduced and maintained skills. The students at this level will build their knowledge of the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective concepts of “Physical Education. Special attention is constantly given to ensure that the materials being taught are developmentally appropriate. The 3 - 5 students are engaged in a wide variety of activities such as, safety guidelines, following directions and protocols. These activities include locomotion, rhythm, recreational games, striking activities, physical fitness/wellness, team/dual/individual sports, and track and field. The skills, while some may be mastered by now, are reviewed and reinforced at level 3-5. More developmentally appropriate skills are introduced and will be built upon at the next level. Every Physical Education class will begin with basic warm-up and stretching activities. The planned activity for the day is then introduced and executed. Emphasis on “why” is introduced at this level. Assessments ongoing and emphasizes participation rather than production however, production of developmentally appropriate skills is encouraged. The students will be challenged annually by activities such as, Hoops For Heart, sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Sixth through Ninth Grade

The Physical Education Program for grades 6-9 focuses and concentrates on enhancing/ mastering the previously introduced skills and learning how to apply physical fitness to everyday life. While every student will not “master” every skill, the developmentally appropriate mastery of the skill will be encouraged. The students will continue to enhance knowledge and understanding of the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective concepts of Physical Education. The 6-9th grade student will engage in developmentally appropriate activities such as safety guidelines, following directions and protocols, conditioning, rhythm, recreational/lifetime activities, physical fitness/wellness, team/dual/individual sports, and track and field. The 6-9th grade student will also be exposed to academic (indoor) instruction in basic biomechanics, human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and first aid. Every Physical Education class will begin with basic warm-up and stretching activities. The students will recall the previously learned skills and “why” they are learning these skills. They will expand this knowledge with correct usage of the emphasized concept. The planned activity for the day is then introduced and executed, paying particular attention to how a skill is executed. Physical assessment is based upon correct execution of a skill, rather than the athletic results. Rules of team/dual/individual sports and games and academic knowledge are assessed by the use of written and practical exams. The students will be challenged annually by activities such as, The Presidential Physical Fitness Test, and Hoops For Heart, sponsored by the American Heart Association.
