Teacher:
Mr. Ed Sammons
The Ninth Grade Spanish program uses language arts skills learned in previous
grades to introduce grammatical and cultural concepts, ideas, strategies and
skills for learning foreign languages in general and Spanish in particular.
Students develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in an increasingly
challenging continuum. In addition, students are introduced to the sociolinguistic
contexts of the Spanish language, as these contexts are encountered in Spain,
Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States. Communicative strategies
are employed throughout the course to enable students to negotiate meaning
in real life situations.
Text:
Prentice Hall Juntos, Uno (First Level) and ancillary workbook
Supplemental Materials:
Authentic magazine articles and videos reinforce concepts and skills, as well
as cultural awareness.
Methods:
Students are introduced to Spanish language structures, vocabulary, pronunciation
and culture through a variety of oral and written exercises. A balance between
communicative methods and traditional grammar-translation methodologies are
used throughout the Ninth-grade Spanish sequence. Students keep a language
portfolio of their written work, including language structures (vocabulary,
verb conjugations, useful phrases) and culture (biographies of historic figures
and contemporary celebrities from the Hispanic world). Cultural celebrations
are a part of the Ninth Grade curriculum.
